Employment in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended March 2006 and June 2006.

The June 2006 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that the number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy increased by about 62 000 persons or 0,9% from March 2006 (an estimated 7 238 000 employees) to June 2006 (an estimated 7 300 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended March 2006 and June 2006.

According to the June 2006 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended June 2006 (April 2006 to June 2006) amounted to R165 351 million. This represents a quarterly increase of R1 487 million or 0,9% compared with the quarter ended March 2006.

Employment in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended June 2005 and June 2006.


According to the June 2006 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey an estimated 7 300 000 people were employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector of the South African economy. This reflected an annual increase of about 222 000 persons or 3,1% compared with June 2005 (an estimated 7 078 000 employees).

Gross earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between the quarters ended June 2005 and June 2006.

The gross earnings paid to employees during the quarter ended June 2006 (April 2006 to June 2006) amounted to R165 351 million. This reflects an annual increase of R13 701 million or 9,0% compared with June 2005 (April 2005 to June 2005).

The June 2006 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased by 1,9% between February 2006 and May 2006.

Average monthly earnings, including bonuses and overtime payments, paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased between May 2005 and May 2006.

The June 2006 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey reflected an annual increase of 7,0% in average monthly earnings paid to employees in the formal non-agricultural business sector between May 2005 (an estimated R6 758) and May 2006 (an estimated R7 231).
