Key findings: P0045 - Quarterly capital expenditure (QCE), December 2024

The total capital expenditure on new assets measured at current prices, for the quarter ended December 2024 was estimated at R100 310 million, showing an increase of 12,5% compared with the quarter ended September 2024 (R89 128 million). 

The largest increase in capital expenditure on new assets between the third and fourth quarters of 2024 was recorded for computer and IT equipment (+78,5%), followed by vehicles and other transport equipment (+72,4%), construction works (+16,7%), computer software (+12,8%), buildings and improvements (+12,1%) and plant, machinery and equipment (+1,6%). A decrease was recorded for ‘other’ assets (-4,3%).  

Total capital expenditure on new assets increased by 5,7% between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the fourth quarter of 2024. The largest year-on-year increase in capital expenditure was recorded for ‘other’ assets (+134,2%), followed by construction works (+92,3%), computer software (+73,1%), vehicles and other transport equipment (+65,5%) and computer and IT equipment (+16,7%). Decreases were recorded for buildings and improvements (-31,3%) and plant, machinery and equipment (-30,3%). 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended December 2024 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 40,9%), followed by ‘other’ assets (17,0%), vehicles and other transport equipment (15,2%), construction works (14,3%), computer and IT equipment (4,4%), buildings and improvements (4,1%) and computer software (4,1%). 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended September 2024 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 45,4%), followed by ‘other’ assets (19,9%), construction works (13,8%), vehicles and other transport equipment (9,9%), buildings and improvements (4,1%), computer software (4,1%) and computer and IT equipment (2,8%).
