Key findings: P0045 - Quarterly capital expenditure (QCE), June 2024

The total capital expenditure on new assets measured at current prices, for the quarter ended June 2024 was estimated at R83 935 million, showing an increase of 1,0% compared with the quarter ended March 2024 (R83 137 million). 

The largest increase in capital expenditure on new assets between the first and second quarters of 2024 was recorded for ‘other’ assets (+70,9%), followed by computer software (+7,0%), construction works (+3,4%) and plant, machinery and equipment (+1,1%). Decreases were recorded for computer and IT equipment (-40,7%), buildings and improvements (-21,8%) and vehicles and other transport equipment (-13,5%). 

Total capital expenditure on new assets increased by 10,1% between the second quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024. The largest year-on-year increase in capital expenditure was recorded for construction works (+109,6%), followed by vehicles and other transport equipment (+90,6%) and ‘other’ assets (+19,6%). Decreases were recorded for buildings and improvements (-36,7%), computer software (-1,7%), computer and IT equipment (-1,6%) and plant, machinery and equipment (-1,4%). 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended June 2024 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 58,7%), followed by construction works (11,6%), ‘other’ assets (10,3%), vehicles and other transport equipment (10,1%), buildings and improvements (4,2%), computer and IT equipment (2,5%) and computer software (2,5%). 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended March 2024 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 58,6%), followed by vehicles and other transport equipment (11,8%), construction works (11,3%), ‘other’ assets (6,1%), buildings and improvements (5,4%), computer and IT equipment (4,3%) and computer software (2,4%).
