Key findings: P0045 - Quarterly capital expenditure (QCE), March 2023

The total capital expenditure on new assets measured at current prices, for the quarter ended March 2023 was estimated at R81 677 million, showing a decrease of 12,3% compared with the quarter ended December 2022  (R93 087 million).


Decreases in capital expenditure on new assets between the quarter ended December 2022 and the quarter ended March 2023 were recorded for computer software (-48,7%), construction works (-19,5%), plant, machinery and equipment (-17,6%) and ‘other’ assets (-11,3%). Increases were recorded for vehicles and other transport equipment (+30,3%), buildings and improvements (+5,4%) and computer and IT equipment (+3,3%).

 

Total capital expenditure on new assets increased by 18,1% between the quarter ended March 2022 and the quarter ended March 2023. The largest percentage increase in capital expenditure was reflected in ‘other’ assets (+451,2%), followed by computer and IT equipment (+196,3%), vehicles and other transport equipment (+122,8%), buildings and improvements (+50,0%), construction works (+16,3%) and computer software (+3,3%). A decrease was recorded for plant, machinery and equipment (-4,4%).

 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended March 2023 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 63,0%), followed by vehicles and other transport equipment (13,3%), buildings and improvements (7,5%), ‘other’ assets (6,7%), computer and IT equipment (3,7%), construction works (3,2%) and computer software (2,6%).

 

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended December 2022 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 67,1%), followed by vehicles and other transport equipment (9,0%), ‘other’ assets (6,6%), buildings and improvements (6,2%), computer software (4,5%), construction works (3,5%) and computer and IT equipment (3,1%).
