Key findings: 12-00-00 - Forestry, logging and related services industry, 2020

The total income in the forestry, logging and related services industry in 2020 was R23,3 billion. The figure represents a decrease of 3,8% over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2019 (R24,2 billion).

In 2020, the top 5 enterprises in the forestry, logging and related services industry contributed 60,6% of the total income. The concentration ratios of the top 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 enterprises were lowest in 2020 at 60,6%, 70,7%, 76,9%, 84,0% and 91,0% respectively.

In 2020, the profit margin in the forestry, logging and related services industry was 6,1%.

The total number of persons employed in the forestry, logging and related services industry as at the end of June 2020 was 36 861. ‘Forestry and related services’ employed the largest number of persons (28 736 or 78,0%). 

The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 32,1%. The sector with the highest proportion of females employed was ‘forestry and related services’ (34,3%), while ‘logging and related services’ had the highest proportion of males employed (75,7%). 

The average value of salaries and wages in the forestry, logging and related services industry in 2020 was R120 235. The type of service with the highest average salaries and wages in 2020 was ‘forestry and related services’ (R131 856).

The capital expenditure on new assets in 2020 (R1,6 billion) represents a decrease of 18,0% per annum over the expenditure reported in the corresponding survey of 2019 (R1,9 billion).
