Idutywa is named after the Dutywa River. The name is derived from Xhosa word ukuduba which means 'to disturb', or 'the disturbed or disordered one'. The name has been said to refer to the scattering of AmaMfengu andaba Thembu by the invasions of Mfecane and Zulu around 1820. The town itself was established in 1858 as a military fort. It is also the birth place of Thabo Mbeki, who was president of South Africa from 1999 and 2008. (GPS coordinates: 32.0947 S, 28.3068 E).
