Paarl is Dutch for 'pearl'. The town was named after a round granite boulder called Paarl by Abraham Gabbema in October 1657 when he saw it glistening with dew in the morning sun. It is known as the location of the Taalmonument (monument to the Afrikaans language). (GPS coordinates: 33.731 S, 18.963 E).
