Dundee is named after Dundee in Scotland, birthplace of its founder, Thomas Paterson Smith. The word is derived from the Gaelic dun, which means 'fortress', 'castle', 'hill' or 'mound', and Deagh, probably from the personal name Daig. The town itself was laid out in 1882. (GPS coordinates: 28.1634 S, 30.2262 E).
