Bloed Rivier is Afrikaans for 'blood river', and named after the river that carries the same name. The name refers to the Battle of Blood River, where an estimated 10 000 - 15 000 Zulus fought 470 Voortrekkers on the 16th December 1838. The battle took place on the bank of Bloed Rivier, which is also known as the Ncome River. (GPS coordinates: 28.0946 S, 30.5233 E).
