Port Edward was named after the Prince of Wales when the town was founded in 1924. The Prince of Wales after which the town was named later become King Edward VII. The site of the town has an interesting history: in 1552 the Portuguese ship Sao Joao ran aground on the beach, and in 1831 fleeing settlers where massacred by Zulu warriors, at a location on the beach which is now called Tragedy Hill. (GPS coordinates: 31.0302 S, 30.232 E).
