Harding was originally established as a military outpost in 1877, following British annexation of East Griqualand in 1874. It was named after Sir Walter Harding (1812-1874) who became the first Chief Justice in Natal, in 1858. (GPS coordinates: 30.5801 S, 29.8907 E).
