Ficksburg is situated at the national border between South Africa and Lesotho. It was named after Johan Izak Jacobus Fick (1816-1892), Commandant-General of the then Orange Free State. The town, as well as neighbouring Meqheleng, was the scene of violent service delivery protests in April 2010. (GPS coordinates: 28.8729 S, 27.8798 E).
