Bultfontein established in 1873, despite the fact that approval for its establishment was granted in 1862. This was due to a disagreement on the actual location of the establishment of the town. The disagreement was eventually solved by establishing two towns: Bultfontein and Hoopstad (about 55 kilometres away from Bultfontein). Bultfontein itself was established on a farm called Bultfontein, belonging to A McCullum. The name is Afrikaans for 'hill fountain' or 'spring on the hill'. (GPS coordinates: 28.273 S, 26.1581 E).
