Hoopstad was established on the farm Kameeldoorns in 1876, the town was originally named Hauptstad, after the surveyor, A P Haupt. However, haupt in German can mean 'capital', and this name was met with disfavour, as Bloemfontein was the capital of the Free State. As a result, the town's name was changed to Hoopstad, which means 'city (town) of hope' in Afrikaans. (GPS coordinates: 27.8333 S, 25.9309 E).
