Wepener was established as a buffer against the Basotho and acquired a village management board in 1875. It was named after Lourens Jacobus (Louw) Wepener (1812-1865), who was killed in battle on 15 August 1865 while trying to storm Thaba Bosigo, the stronghold of Moshoeshoe I. (GPS coordinates: 29.7255 S, 27.0284 E).
