Kuruman was established in 1887. Its name is derived from Khoikhoi word that means 'where wild tobacco stands' or possibly from the Tswana words kurwana (meaning 'gourd') or from kludu (meaning 'tortoise'). (GPS coordinates: 27.4559 S, 23.4374 E).
