Dassen Island is located 58 km north-west of Table Bay. The island is about 5 km long and 2 km wide, and is named after the abundance of rock hyraxes that live there. Named Ilha Branca ('white island') by the early Portuguese mariners, it was renamed Elizabeth Eiland by Joris van Spilbergen in 1601, and then Coney Island by Sir Edward Michelbourne in 1605.
