Riebeek-Kasteel was established in the 1860s and named after the mountain Riebeek-Kasteel. The mountain itself was named in honour of Jan van Riebeeck in 1661 by an expedition under Pieter Cruythoff. (GPS coordinates: 33.3812 S, 18.8973 E).
