Darling was first known as Groene Kloof. It was established in 1853 and named after Sir Charles Henry Darling, Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape from 1851 to 1854. During the Second World War various South African Air Force squadrons - who patrolled the South African coast for German U-Boats - were based in Darling. The area is well known for its wildflowers, and the town hosts the annual Darling Wildflower Show. (GPS coordinates: 33.3703 S, 18.3859 E).
