Riebeek West is located at the foot of the mountain named Riebeek-Kasteel, and the town derives its name from this mountain. The mountain in turn was named after Jan Van Riebeeck (1619-77), a Dutch colonial administrator. (GPS coordinates: 33.3542 S, 18.8657 E).
