Bushmans River is situated on the banks of the river which carries the same name. It was established in 1897 when farmers from the interior were given permission by the Department of Forestry to camp along the banks of the river during the holiday period. Land leases were made available in the early 1900s. The Xhosa name for the river is Qhorha, adapted from the Khoikhoi name Cougha which means 'hippopotamus river'.
