Cradock has its origins as a frontier outpost that was established on the farm Buffelskloof in 1813. Later, in 1814, it was proclaimed a township, and the first erven were granted on the 27 August 1818. The town was named after Sir John Francis Cradock (1762-1839), Governor of the Cape from 1811 to 1814. Lord Charles Somerset, who became Governor of the Cape in 1814, did not like the new settlement of Cradock at all, describing it as "a miserable place which could never advance". He was proven wrong, however, as the town is now one of the Cape's primary wool centres, and it also produces other products such as mohair, fruit and beef. The area is also popular for its sulphur springs. (GPS coordinates: 32.1615 S, 25.6481 E).
