Mossel Bay was originally named Aliwal, but was renamed Mosselbaai in 1601 by the Dutch navigator Paulus van Caerden because mussels (Dutch: mossels) were all he could find to replenish the ship's food stores. (GPS coordinates: 34.1859 S, 22.0932 E).
