Zoar is 'Garden of the Lord' or 'wonderful garden', and as a name is taken from Genesis 13:10. The town was established in 1817 by the Southern African Mission Society, who were assisted in their work by Berlin Missionary Society from 1833. Later, the settlement was bought by a local farmer and the settlement's water diverted from the area. (GPS coordinates: 33.5232 S, 21.4629 E).
