Ladismith was originally named Lady Smith, after the wife of Sir Harry Smith, Governor 1847-1851, Lady Juana Smith. In 1879 the name of the town was changed to Ladismith to avoid confusion with Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal. (GPS coordinates: 33.4849 S, 21.2573 E).
