Arniston is named after the British troopship Arniston, which was wrecked nearby. The settlement is also known as Waenhuiskrans, an Afrikaans word meaning 'wagon house cliff', referring to a local sea cave which is large enough to accommodate a wagon and a span of oxen. (GPS coordinates: 34.6778 S, 20.226 E).
