Butterworth developed from a Wesleyan Missionary Society station established there in 1827 by Reverend WJ Shrewsbury. Founded in 1880, the town was named after Joseph Butterworth, a former treasurer of the Society. The Xhosa name for this place is eGcuwa. (GPS coordinates: 32.3222 S, 28.1826 E).
