Tafelkop is Afrikaans for 'table hill'. The name for the town is taken from a flat-topped hill that is located nearby. Oliver Kgadime Matsepe (1932-1974), poet and Northern Sotho novelist was born in Tafelkop. He was awarded twice the S.E. Mqhayi Prize by the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (South African Academy for Arts and Science), and had written 4 volumes of poetry and 5 novels in the two years before his death.
