Mokopane was named after Chief Mokopane. The town was previously known as Potgietersrus, and was originally established in 1852. In 1870 it was abandoned because of fever but it was reestablished after 1890. At first the town was named Vredenburg but on 25 September 1858 it was renamed Pietpotgietersrust after Pieter Johannes, son of the Voortrekker leader Andries Hendrik Potgieter. The name was later shortened to Potgietersrust and in 1939 the final t was excluded. The town was renamed Mokopane in 2003. (GPS coordinates: 24.1857 S, 29.0287 E).
