Polokwane is a Northern Sotho word meaning 'place of safety', referring to a hollow surrounded by an open, grassland plain. Originally named Pietersburg, the town was established on the farm Sterkloop in 1884. In 2005 the city was renamed Polokwane. (GPS coordinates: 23.9112 S, 29.4618 E).
