Thohoyandou was the former capital of the bantustan of Venda. Built in the late 1970s, it was proclaimed the capital when Venda was established in 1979. In 1994 it was absorbed into South Africa when the homeland policy was dissolved. The name Thohoyandou means 'head of the elephant', and is taken from the name of King Thohoyandou, who ruled the Vhavenda kingdom in the early 1700s. (GPS coordinates: 22.9758 S, 30.4717 E).
