Giyani is a name that means 'place where people dance for joy' and is of Shangaan origin. The town was established in 1969 to serve as the administrative capital for the homeland of Gazankulu, set up for primarily for the Tsonga speaking people. In 1994 Gazankulu was incorporated into South Africa when the homelands policy was disolved. (GPS coordinates: 23.3083 S, 30.7057 E).
