Mbombela was proclaimed in 1905. On the banks of the Crocodile River, the town was originally known as Nelspruit, named after three Nel brothers in 1891 who let their cattle graze there. The town's name was changed to Mbombela in 2009. Mobombla is SiSwati and means 'a lot of people in a small space'. (GPS coordinates: 25.4849 S, 30.9765 E).
