Middelburg was originally established on the farm Sterkfontein, in 1866. At first, the town was named Nazareth, but was renamed Middelburg in 1874. There are two proposed reasons for the name chosen: that the town is located half-way between Pretoria and Lydenburg, or that it was named after the Dutch city of that name.
