Bethal is named after two sisters, Elizabeth du Plooy and Alida Naude (i.e., beth and al). Both sisters were wives of the original owner of the farm Blesbokspruit on which the town was established. It was proclaimed on the 12 October 1880. (GPS coordinates: 26.473 S, 29.4613 E).
