Ermelo was proclaimed a town in 1880, and founded by Dutch Reformed Church Reverend Frans Lion Cachet. He named the town Ermelo after the town in the Netherlands, where he had been converted to Christianity. The town was destroyed by British forces in 1901 but rebuilt in 1903.
