Centurion was formed over many years by the amalgamation of various suburbs and farms. It was officially granted City Council status in 1962 and named Lyttelton, but in 1967 it was renamed Verwoerdburg after the former prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd, a year after his assassination. In 1995 the name was changed to Centurion, after the Centurion Park (now called SuperSport Park) cricket ground that is located in the area. (GPS coordinates: 25.8606 S, 28.1082 E).
