Laudium was established on the farm Mooiplaats in 1960, and proclaimed an Indian township by the apartheid government in 1961. It was originally named Claudius, after Claudius Marais de Vries, mayor of Pretoria. It is said that the name Laudium is derived from parts of the mayor's first two names: laudiu from Claudius and M from Marais. (GPS coordinates: 25.7868 S, 28.0961 E).
