Rayton was established in either 1903 or 1904 on the farm Elandshoek. The name was formed from parts of the first and second name of Mrs Ray Wollaston, wife of the general manager of the Montrose Diamond Mining Company that originally established the town. (GPS coordinates: 25.7117 S, 28.4775 E).
