Mamelodi is a Sotho name meaning 'mother of melodies'. The name is believed to have been given to President Paul Kruger because of his ability to whistle. Established in 1951, it was first known as Vlakfontein and was renamed Mamelodi in 1962. (GPS coordinates: 25.7159 S, 28.3932 E).
