Ga-Rankuwa was proclaimed a township in 1965 and formed part of the former Tswana homeland, Bophuthatswana. Its main function was to provide labour to the border industry area of Rosslyn, 10km away. The name has a number possible origins: one explanation is that it is said to be derived from Ga-Ranku, which means 'at the master of the sheep'. Another states that it was named after a Bakgatla headman, Rankuwa Boikhutso. Rankuwa means 'we are taken'. (GPS coordinates: 25.5848 S, 28.0037 E).
