Hammanskraal was said to be named after Hamman, a cattleman who built a shelter there to protect livestock from predators. The name can be translated as 'Hamman's kraal'. Kraal is the Afrikaans word for byre, an enclosure for cattle. (GPS coordinates: 25.4111 S, 28.2708 E).
