Alexandra known as Alex is thought to have been named after Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII of England. Other sources state that the township was named after the wife of the farmer who originally owned the land. It was established in 1912 as a township. Notable residents of the area included Nelson Mandela, Samora Machel, Hugh Masekela and other prominent figures. (GPS coordinates: 26.1016 S, 28.1052 E).
