Sandton derives its name from two other names: Sandown and Bryanston. Sandton was proclaimed as a municipality in 1969, but during the 1990s many businesses and corporate offices moved to Sandton, making it a vibrant financial and business centre; the Johannesburg stock exchange is located there, for example. Sandton is regarded as one of the most wealthiest areas on the African continent. (GPS coordinates: 26.0596 S, 28.049 E).
