Germiston was originally named Elandsfontein after the farm on which it was established, in 1887. In 1904, however, its name was changed to Germiston, after a farm near Glasgow in Scotland, birthplace of the gold-mining pioneer, John Jack. (GPS coordinates: 26.2319 S, 28.1734 E).
