Centurion was formed over many years by the amalgamation of various suburbs and farms. It was officially granted City Council status in 1962 and named Lyttelton, but in 1967 it was renamed Verwoerdburg after the former prime minister who was assassinated the previous year. In 1995 its name changed to Centurion, after the Centurion Park. (GPS coordinates: 25.9236 S, 28.1913 E).
