Carletonville is a gold mining town that was originally established on the farm Twyfelvlakte No 8 and officially proclaimed on 28 January 1948. One of the richest gold-producing areas in the world, the town was named after Guy Carleton Jones, who was director of Consolidated Gold Fields for 35 years. The South African cricketer, Brian McMillan, grew up in Carletonville. (GPS coordinates: 26.3543 S, 27.4088 E).
