Westonaria was formed in 1948 through the amalgamation of the townships Venterspost and Westonaria. It was originally called Venterspost, but in 1952 the name changed to Westonaria when municipal status was attained. The pronunciation of the name is derived from 'western area', after the company that developed the township, Western Areas Ltd. (GPS coordinates: 26.3267 S, 27.6591 E).
