Stellenbosch was named by Simon van der Stel after himself and the wilde bosch or 'wild forest' there. The town is well known for its university, wine-farms and oak-trees. Established in 1679, it is the second oldest European settlement in South Africa. (GPS coordinates: 33.9387 S, 18.8636 E).
