Vereeniging was developed in 1882 on the farms Klipplaatsdrift and Leeuwkuil following the discovery of coal in the area. It was proclaimed a town in 1892. Its name is Dutch for 'association'. The city is most known for being the place where the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed, ending the Second Boer War (1899
